UL Powders

Underwriters Laboratory (UL):

  • Is a global, independent safety science company
  • Offers product performance analysis and 3rd party objectivity in testing products to established specifications
  • Has a specification for organic coatings, including powder coatings, which can be applied to the exterior and interior surfaces of steel enclosures of outdoor-use electrical equipment.

Testing requirements

The UL 1332 requirements are applied to IFS Coatings’ one coat products for steel or zinc-coated steel, with specified pretreatment, application, cure schedules and minimum dry-film thickness.

One of the key concerns for outdoor-use steel enclosures is corrosion, so the UL 1332 specification tests coatings performance against atmospheric corrosion. IFS Coatings’ UL Listed powders are designed to meet the performance requirements of this specification and more.

To meet the UL 1332 specification, IFS coatings powders were put through a series of tests including corrosion testing with salt spray exposure and moist Carbon-Dioxide–Sulphur Dioxide air exposure, light and water exposure and infrared analysis. The testing includes internationally recognized ASTM tests and the performance requirements are indicated by UL, with the testing taking 3 – 4 months to complete at the UL laboratory.

Product performance

As well as meeting UL1332 corrosion performance, these IFS powder coatings will also display:

  • Excellent adhesion
  • Excellent hardness
  • Excellent flexibility
  • Good color retention
  • Good gloss retention

Colors

Thousands of solid colors are available in the IFS Coatings UL listed formulation - talk to us about your color needs! Colors include (but are not limited to):

  • Tan

Don't forget...

  • Don’t forget, pretreatment is just as important as the powder. IFS low cure Polyester powders are UL listed for 5 stage Zinc or Iron phosphate pre-treated steel as well as 5 stage non phosphated or zirconium or nano technology pre-treated steel and galvanized steel.
  • Don't forget, you are responsible for testing your final coated product with UL to receive the complete approval for the substrate/enclosure, pretreatment, and topcoat.
  • Don't forget you can verify IFS Coatings' UL Listing on the UL website at their online certifications directory using file number MH28506

Your IFS representative can help determine the right UL product for you - using IFS UL approved products depends on your substrate and pretreatment.
